Walking For Mental Health
The fourth-annual NAMIWalk Hawai’i, held Oct. 1 in Honolulu, raised more than $80,000 to support mental health education throughout the state. It was the event’s most successful year yet, drawing a record 850 participants. The 3K walk is part of the NAMIWalks nationwide fundraising and mental health awareness program. The walk is held in more than 83 communities around the country to provide services to nearly 32,000 adults and 12,000 children affected by serious mental illness. Highlights included free massages, blood pressure testing, health education, food and entertainment, as well as comments by honorary Walk chairman Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz.
NEA Honors Kaapana
U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Akaka and U.S. Rep. Mazie K. Hirono honored Hawaii master musician Ledward Kaapana Sept. 21. Kaapana received the 2011 National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship Award at a ceremony in the U.S. Capitol. Kaapana is a master of two instruments closely associated with Hawaii: the slack-key guitar and ukulele. The ‘Ohana Kauaua, believed to be the largest family in the Islands with more than 5,000 identified family members, has elected new Oahu officers.
