Sacred Hearts Academy senior Richel Cole received the 2011 President of the United States Volunteer Service Award. Cole helped launch the YWCA Youth Network, a youth-run initiative that provides projects and events for young people. She raised $5,000 to support the program, is responsible for planning events, connecting with community supporters, managing budgets and raising program awareness. President Obama stated that Cole’s volunteer community service demonstrates the commitment to her community that moves America a step closer to its great promise. She also was named one of the top runners-up in the 2011 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in Hawaii for her leadership and service in the community.
A Sustainable Dog’s Life
Graham Builders presented Hawaiian Humane Society with a check for $750, and Honolulu resident Steven Dung and his family with Hawaii’s first “green” dog house. Dung was the highest bidder for the dog house at last weekend’s BIA Home Building and Remodeling Show, which Graham Builders donated to the Humane Society. The “Green Dog Haus” was created to showcase Graham Builders’ expertise in sustainable design and construction.

A blessing and open house for the new headquarters of Gray Line Hawaii/Polynesian Adventure Tours and Norwegian Cruise Lines took place Feb. 3. Pictured (from left) are Colin Murphy, president of Polynesian Adventure Tours; Bob George, who founded Polynesian Adventure Tours, and former Polynesian Adventure Tours president Michael Carr. The celebration, with maile lei, food and entertainment, was held at the new company’s Mapunapuna offices with about 300 in attendance.
