Chef Donato’s Private Parties.

When Donato Loperfido ran his restaurant in Manoa, the chances of getting him to cater your party or private function were pretty slim. Today, although he seems busier than ever, you can book Loperfido and his new restaurant, Pasta Basta, for private functions, with a menu of Italian dishes created by chef. The private banquet room is available for everything from lunch parties to corporate events to dinners celebrating any occasion.

Chef Donato is known for his attention to detail in the kitchen and for his use of locally farmed ingredients and specialty imports from Italy. With his company, Flavors of Italy, he’s able to add ingredients to a menu that are otherwise almost impossible to find in Hawaii. He sources growers, knows winemakers and travels to Italy several times a year to check on producers of olives, grapes and cheese. And this translates to great news for foodies. Pasta Basta may be one of the most casual dining spots in town (customers order at a counter and there is no wait staff or servers), but the food is unbeatable. If you’re planning a special holiday meeting this coming season or looking for a place to get together with fabulous food, check out Donato’s menus or ask him to customize something for you. You’ll be guaranteed Italian food at its finest - and a fun time too.

Wine Wednesdays At Longhi’s.

The wine parties that began as so much fun on a semi-regular basis at Longhi’s have become a regular event.“People have a good time when they come,” says GM

Charlie Longhi in typically understated style. Charlie and his brother Peter are the brains and palates responsible for the wine list at Longhi’s - one of only three restaurants in Hawaii to achieve the acclaimed Wine Spectator Best Award of Excellence - and that makes their wine parties even more of a deal.

“We always have fabulous wine, great food and a fun time,” says Longhi’s manager, Mary Ann Bowman. The Paradise String Quartet plays as guests enjoy a selection of wines and hearty platters of Italian food served family style.

“The parties started out as a way to let our guests sample new wines on a fairly regular basis,” says Bowman, “but it became obvious that people enjoyed them so much so we responded to requests by holding one every month.”

Seating is limited so do call to make reservations.

Dinnertime Is Murder.

If you feel your dinner conversation could use a little more excitement, then you might want to check out Dave and Buster’s, where guests dine during a three-act thriller and try to solve the murder as they eat.

Dinner comprises three courses (Caesar salad, prime rib or grilled chicken breast and dessert) and three acts of a play where the crime scene unfolds as you eat.

Doors to the dinner theater at Dave and Buster’s open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins promptly at 7. This month’s shows are Oct. 19 and 27. Cost is $36.95.

Suntory Sizzles With 27 Percent Off.

There’s never been a better time to try out the menu - and check out the new décor - at Suntory. After a multimillion-dollar renovation, the restaurant now has an environment that impresses guests as much as its food.

“Everyone is happy with how the remodeling came out,” says manager Aki Peters.

Restaurant Suntory is an original tenant of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center and is celebrating 27 years in business. Today, the restaurant looks out from its third-floor location over newly designed gardens and a bustling Waikiki, but the menu items that made the restaurant famous require no updating. Washoku, teppanyaki and sushi dining are specialties here.

This month guests can take 27 percent off their entire food check at dinner by presenting coupons found in this newspaper.
