A bite-sized look at food events in Honolulu
Meals from the Heart 2007: Meals, Martinis and Monte Carlo
In a departure from its usual Hawaiian-themed weddings, showers and buffets, The Willows will be transformed into a casino Oct. 18, complete with Brazilian dancers, gambling tables, a martini bar and a spectacular display of food from executive chef Jay Matsukawa. The fundraiser - Meals from the Heart 2007: Meals, Martinis and Monte Carlo - is in support of Hawaii Meals on Wheels.
Founded in 1979, the Hawaii-based organization delivers more than 300 hot meals a day to elderly and housebound clients. It’s the only hot meal many of the recipients have all day. Meals on Wheels helps preserve an element of independence in allowing people to stay home, and its volunteers also provide immeasurable support to clients in both a spiritual and a physical sense. And the organization is close to the heart of The Willows’ managing director Kyle Nakayama, who’s seen firsthand the benefits the volunteer visits - and meals - can bring.
“I had a friend whose grandmother benefitted from the service,” says Kyle, “and through her, we learned that this is a worthwhile organization.”
The evening is a rare event for The Willows - the restaurant has never closed for a private fundraising event before, and expectations are high about the dcor, entertainment and food.

Individual tickets are $125 per person and table sponsorships are available. Reservations can be made by calling the Meals on Wheels office at 988-6747 or visit www.hmow.org for more information.
