Kobe Steak Fest At d.k’s
If your dad is a steak lover, then pick up the phone and make reservations at d.k’s Steak House in Waikiki, which has a Father’s Day treat that’s as rare as a perfectly cooked rib eye.
With the only dry-aging house in the Islands, d.k has been serving steaks with a difference since opening day.
“We like to do things a little bit differently,” says general manager Ivy Nagayama,“and with Father’s Day, we wanted to offer our local guests something that they perhaps don’t get to try too often.”
Just back from a food trip to Las Vegas, Ivy had an opportunity to sample some of the world’s most highly prized beef, and decided it would be perfect for Father’s Day in Honolulu. Kobe beef is legendary for its delicate texture, intense flavor and high marble content. Marbled meat (the marbling is the white, intramuscular fat that runs through red meat) tends to be much juicier and more tender than meats with less fat, making Kobe beef the world’s most desired steak. The beef itself comes from the Wagyu breed of cattle, found, until recently, only in Japan. But rising land costs and feed costs make the beef prohibitively expensive (by many reports, more than $300 per pound). Today,Wagyu are being raised, to the same exacting standards as in Japan,on less expensive land in Australia and California. “We just love the quality of the meat,” says Ivy, “and although we can’t do it all the time - we thought it would be a perfect way to celebrate Father’s Day.”
The Kobe beef promotion at d.k’s will be offered June 16-23, and preparations include filet mignon, rib eye, New York steak and the ultimate burger - made with Kobe beef, vine-ripened tomatoes, grilled Maui onions, truffle steak fries and whole grain mustard aioli.

Hong Kong Harbor View offers daily kamaaina specials
Dim Sum with a Difference at Hong Kong Harbor View.
There are specials aimed at kamaaiana served daily at Hong Kong Harbor View at Aloha Tower Marketplace, including discounted rates on dim sum for early diners. Chef Chang will create a menu for almost any occasion (including large graduation parties), and while there are almost 200 different dishes on the regular menu, there are dozens more in his head - just ask and he’ll be happy to tempt you with a menu. There are also excellent vegetarian offerings, and efforts are made to accommodate any diner requests. As well as the traditional dim sum carts, offering baskets of everything from braised pigs feet to spare ribs and seafood dumplings, there is a grill cart pushed from table to table, offering a selection of single items that include shrimp stuffed mushrooms, look fun, pot stickers, mochi rice and stuffed eggplant. The dishes are grilled individually for a few moments before being served at the table.
Dim Sum at Hong Kong Harbor View is served from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with kamaaiana specials (dim sum for just $1.89) offered until 11 a.m. daily.
