Taking mom out on Mother’s Day is a given. It’s the most popular dining day of the year as restaurants put on their best displays to honor our favorite women. Here are a few of the most interesting - and best value -breakfast, lunch and dinner options for your family this weekend.

Helemano Plantation

You can’t beat the value, the views or the amount of locally grown produce on the menu. Helemano Plantation might be a little off the beaten track, but for those who fondly remember a quieter, gentler Hawaii, Helemano is the perfect place to spend the day.

This Mother’s Day, the Country Inn restaurant opens for one of the best value brunches on the island, serving dishes made with fruits and vegetables grown on property. The Chinese/American buffet features Alaskan king crab legs, egg foo yung, crab won ton, chicken zucchini, beef broccoli and sweet sour ribs, as well as fried rice, chow mein and chow fun, and a host of other dishes with a local flair. Fresh fruits, picked from Helemano’s gardens, make a perfect dessert, or you can take a short walk to the bakery where there’s homemade cookies, taro chips, freshly cut pineapple with li hing mui and, if you’re lucky, some freshly made pineapple or coconut pies, a Bake Shop specialty.

There’s even a gift shop where you can treat your mom to some Hawaiian heirloom jewelry.

Helemano is certainly one of the most unique dining destinations on the island, with all profits going to support the work of ORI, founded by Susanna Cheung. This value buffet - with more to offer than just locally grown food - is just $8.50 per person. The goodwill and sense of aloha you’ll feel when you get there is all free.

The Colony - Affordable Fine Dining

And if your mom enjoys fine dining in a atmosphere that’s relaxed, there are even more options at the Hyatt. At The Colony - Hyatt’s well-known steak and seafood restaurant - there’s a special Mom’s Day dinner that includes a poached prawn and mesclun salad, boursin glazed petite filet with tobacco onions and port wine demi, kiawe-broiled jumbo scallop or a baked Atlantic lobster tail with a sweet chili sauce. Dessert is a winning combination of dark chocolate, strawberry and banana mousse torte with Bailey’s cream and mint. Yum. Mother’s Day dinner is $65.

Local people don’t really need persuading that the Hyatt Waikiki is one of the best value spots in town. The Hyatt has been wooing kamaaina for years, and with great rates, good food and reasonable prices, it has no trouble filling up its restaurants with savvy diners. There are several dining options at the Hyatt this weekend. For family brunch, try the Terrace Grille - dine indoors or on the lanai with views across Waikiki beach. This year’s all-youcan-eat buffet is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and features a huge salad bar, soups, an omelet station, a carving station with prime rib, ham and roast pork, and entrees like crab cake Benedict, poached salmon, Portuguese sausage, breast of chicken with boursin and tomato fondue, and broiled steak with a sweet soy sauce. Too many desserts to mention and a friendly, upbeat staff make this location a favorite for this Sunday.

Treat your Mom To Musashi

Brunch may be more traditional, but if your mom loves Japanese food - and particularly teppanyaki dining - then Musashi is the place to go. At Musashi you’re guaranteed excellent Japanese food, with prices that are kind to kamaaina served by a truly warm and welcoming staff. Best bet on a menu that includes several tempting dishes? Go for the Family Style menu that includes snow crab with Bibb lettuce, salad with sesame seed dressing, namasu, maki and nigiri combination sushi, sashimi, shrimp and vegetable tempura, prime New York steak, teriyaki hibachi scallops and chicken, soup, pickled vegetables, rice and hot tea are all included for $35. Minimum of six in each party is required, with 24 hours advance notice.

Honor Mom at Sansei

You can be sure that one of the people being honored this weekend at d.k’s Steak House will be Sandy Kodama - owner D.K.‘s mom. The energetic mom and grandma turns hostess most nights, welcoming guests to both Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar, and d.k’s Steak House. “Mom is pretty awesome in my eyes,” says D.K, “and even if she wasn’t my mom I’d think that! She has amazing energy, and the thing about her is she just gives and gives with all her heart. She doesn’t care about taking. And she means so well. I can’t say there’s a bad bone in her body.”

And even though it’s a special day, you just may see Sandy working at the restaurants this weekend. The four-course menu at d.k’s includes Fresh Fanny Bay oysters, soup, salad and a choice of 30-day-aged prime rib (slow-roasted and then topped with blue cheese butter), Australian rack of lamb, seafood cioppino (with Alaskan king crab, jumbo tiger shrimp, scallops and clams), steamed fresh onaga and a choice of desserts that include the steak house’s gorgeous bittersweet chocolate cheesecake, $60.
