Ruth’s Chris Steak House, recently voted Best Steak House in Honolulu by readers of MidWeek and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, will introduce a prime time dinner special beginning this week. The menu, which features some of the restaurant’s signature dishes, will be offered from July 17 at all five locations throughout Hawaii (there are two Ruth’s Chris’ in Honolulu, at Restaurant Row and Waikiki Beachwalk). Diners must order by 6 p.m. to receive the special discounted menu. The sizzlin’ promotion is designed to appeal to a wide range of customers - those who have a special reason to celebrate will appreciate the famous Ruth’s Chris fine dining attention to detail, and diners who enjoy eating before the sun goes down should enjoy the benefits of the reduced price menu.

Three courses are offered, with appetizers including the classic Caesar Salad, Steak House Salad or Spinach Salad. Entrees include a choice of Petit Filet, a 12-oz. Ribeye, fresh island fish, sizzling Veal Chop or a Broiled Double Breast of Chicken. Diners can choose from some of Ruth’s Chris’ most popular side dishes including creamed spinach, sautéed mushrooms and mashed potatoes.

Dessert includes a wicked whisky sauce bread pudding.

Director of sales and promotions Alex Kirley says that the promotion began with kamaaina in mind. “It’s a celebration for our newest restaurant opening,” she says, “and our way of saying thank you to the community for its support of Ruth’s Chris Steak House over the years.”

Kids Eat Free at The Willows

Kyle Nakayama, managing director of The Willows
Kyle Nakayama, managing director of The Willows

My two little boys, Max and Finn, think The Willows is one of the greatest places to eat in Honolulu. Oblivious to other diners and to the fact that they are in one of Hawaii’s oldest restaurants, they run from the parking lot to the water fountain with an eagerness that is only matched by the prospect of a trip to the ice cream sundae bar.

This month, children 10 years old and under eat free at The Willows - so it’s the perfect time to see what families love about the open air restaurant. There’s an excellent all-you-can-eat buffet served nightly, and a variety of dining rooms in which to sit. The gardens and water features at The Willows have all the charm of old Hawaii - but extensive remodeling in recent years has brought the restaurant firmly up to date. And while I’m not suggesting that you let the kids run wild through the gardens while you eat, you’ll be surprised at the amount of time they’ll want to spend watching water spurt from an underground source. Take a large appetite, your favorite family members, and perhaps a change of clothes.

The Kids Eat Free promotion runs until the end of July.

Chuck’s Communal Table

One of the things that guests love most about dining with Chuck Furuya is that he’s happy to share his extensive wine knowledge with anyone who wants to learn.

“The communal table is a way of sharing wine and food in the relaxed atmosphere of Vino,” says the master sommelier,” and it’s a way to let guests try new wines, share their opinions and find out about the winemakers.”

There’s one table that seats 12 guests (seats sell out quickly) and family style dishes are served on large platters. There’s a bottle of wine with each dish - dinner usually consists of three wines and three new dishes. “We eat, drink, talk story and have lots of fun,” says Furuya.

The communal table is offered about once a month, and the cost is $39 per person.

Hyatt Scoops Awards at Flavors of Honolulu

We guessed that the restaurants from the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort and Spa would probably be amont the people’s choice at the recent Flavors Of Honolulu - and we were right. Ciao Mein won awards for Most Flavorful Pasta, (fusili with chicken in a creamy macadamia nut pesto sauce). Musashi won Most Flavorful Chicken (misoyaki chicken with garlic fried rice). And The Colony, know for its USDA prime beef and fresh Pacific seafood, claimed the honor of Best Dessert, with a white chocolate dipped Oreo cheesecake on a stick with Starbucks coffee sauce. Ciao Mein runs a menu that features some of its award winning dishes in an all-you-can-eat style.

For reservations at any of the Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa restaurants, call 923-1234.
