There’s nothing like a birthday party for the family elders to bring out the food, music and friends. Waiahole Elementary School, which now has only 70 students, marked its 125th year in style with many of its shining alumni in the crowd or on the stage. Exhibits and photos reminded former students of just how rich and far back the school’s history goes. It began as the vehicle to educate the valley’s rural population, offering farming courses as well as standard subjects. Helping celebrate on Sept. 13 were Jerry Santos and Olomana, Kurt Kipapa of Na Kani Nui and Daniel Dumadag of Hamma Jammaz and hula halau, pony rides, games, a petting zoo, produce market (from valley crops) and luau plates. Now, back to your studies, kids!
