Kailua Library manager Sandy Akana’s retirement bash Nov. 29 was not the place for silent reading. Held in the library courtyard, 200 friends, patrons and relatives enjoyed dinner and dancing to the big-band sounds of the King Pins as they bid farewell to their favorite librarian. Though Akana has worked at Kailua since 1988, she also started the Windward bookmobile while at the Kaneohe branch and helped establish the Waimanalo Public and School Library, working there for 10 years. If you notice a lot of red among these well-wishers, it’s a good-luck symbol to help her in her new “retirement” role as a reading resource teacher, masseuse and collaborator on various Windward book projects.
