“You glaze, we fire” - That was the theme for this year’s Raku Ho’olaule’a. Artists of all ages got to experience the thrill of the 400-year-old Japanese pottery process May 31 on the sands at Waimanalo Bay Beach Park during a free Community Kiln Day. Hawaii Craftsmen held a special wheel-throwing demonstration, and patrons got the chance to watch as fire and flames transformed their tea bowl creations in a kiln. Special guest and nationally known raku ceramicist Stephen Braun made the trip from Montana to provide slide lectures, wet clay demonstrations and other activities during the month-long ceramics celebration at various spots around Oahu.
