The May Day/Lei Day tradition in Hawaii is alive and well, and smelling great at Windward Oahu schools and parks this spring. Dozens of schools rehearse the Islands’ generations-old traditions with their students to prepare for the pageantry, which is no longer reserved for just May 1. The process requires great effort and time-management skills from teachers, parents and all those flower pickers out there. Enjoy a glimpse at Aikahi Elementary School’s May Day pageant — held April 28 — which honored its retiring kupuna, Lehua Weatherwax. The theme was ‘Ola i ka Wai a ka Opua’ (“there is life in the water from clouds”.
