Everyone looks up at the Hawaiian skies, but at Windward Community College, they’re seeing way beyond those ‘Windward and mauka clouds’ these days. With the installation of Lanihuli Observatory’s dome in June, state-of-theart telescopes are now ready for action. And with the observatory dedication Oct. 12, public use is soon to follow. Nearly 50 prominent donors, residents and staff met for the ceremony (conducted by assistant language arts professor Liko Hoe), a tour the facility and pupus. Lanihuli, predicts astronomy professor Joe Ciotti, will bring thousands of schoolchildren “intimately closer to the rich heritage of Polynesian navigation and modern astronomical discoveries on Mauna Kea.”
