With so many fingers plucking away on the Windward side, it’s no wonder Kaneohe has two ‘ukulele manufacturers. Joe and Kristen Souza started Kanile‘a ‘Ukulele in 1997 by assembling them on their patio. Business grew so much they reopened recently in a much larger space at 46-216 Kahuhipa St. where they can turn out 150 units a month. The official reopening Oct. 8 had friends, staff, family, hula and plenty of music from pros like Ken Makuakane, Imua Garza, Na Pu‘ukani and others who play Kanile‘a ukuleles. “It was truly a fabulous event,” says Kristen, “and we appreciate all who joined in this celebration.” Kimo Keawe blessed the facility, and the Kanile‘a staff performed two songs in their debut as a chorus.
