Darling Kukahiko had a vision for Kahaluu Elementary School, which was struggling with low morale while ‘restructuring.’ A pastor’s wife, she drew neighbors together to host a ho‘olaulea April 8 to raise $4,000 for the teachers and create a visible support group for the school. Did it work? And how! “We exceeded our goal, had over 300 people there and got commitments for next year,” she says. From the pig to the poi, games to prayers, churches to parents, KEY Project to HCAP — the Waihee Road “village” rallied to raise those keiki, so to speak. “The school was reluctant at first, but I said just have your curriculum fair and we’ll do the rest, because you folks take good care of our kids.” Amen.
