“It couldn’t have been a more beautiful day,” declared Dana Ritchie Fujikake, co-producer of the first Windward Oahu venue for Hawaii’s International Jazz Festival. Fans flocked to the Great Lawn on the Windward Community College campus Feb. 11 where the pros played their hearts out for eight straight hours. The crowd ate it up — along with plates from the food booths. Like jazz itself, the mood that day was both ebullient and somber, as when Abe Weinstein’s friends and jazz colleagues paid tribute to the festival’s founder, who died Jan. 29, just days before the free Kaneohe concert. (His first festival was in 1993.) “It was very successful,” added a very busy Fujikake, “and they all want to do it again.”
