At one of three 2008 dressage competitions this year at Waimanalo’s Hilltop Ranch, about 20 horse-and-rider teams came together to test their training progress. Held June 7 and 8, the event showcased the athletic ability of the horse and how training has helped the rider and her horse work together. Suzi Hillis, who manages Hilltop Ranch, recently won a gold cup for her performance. “It’s a wonderful program and an expensive hobby for children,” says Marjorie Miyahara, who volunteers daily to graze horses. “But it teaches them so much, and there is great camaraderie among them, from age 5 to adult.” Despite the serious look of the competitors, the whole lifestyle is “really, really relaxing,” Miyahara says. Here’s her tip: Horses loves bananas.
