Windward Galleries Showcase Tributes To Area’s Unique Beauty

Art shows are opening this week in Windward Oahu, one honoring Kailua as a town and a place of beauty and peace; the other celebrates Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden.

Gallery ‘Iolani at Wind-ward Community College presents Kailua I ke oho I ka Malanai (Kailua in the wisps of the Malanai breeze) with an artists’ reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday. This exhibit features photography from the award-winning lenses of Mark Hamasaki and Kapulani Landgraf, who collaboratively are known as Piliamo’o. Sponsored by a Kailua Historical Society grant, the exhibit runs through May 31. The gallery is open weekdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. and will have a special showing May 14 during WCC’s commencement day.

Aloha Ho’omaluhia XXVII is being presented at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden May 2-29, featuring 11 artists who are continuously inspired by the beauty and peace they find at Ho’omaluhia. An artists’ reception is set for 4 to 6 p.m. this Sunday, and the public is welcome.

Open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily at the garden’s visitor center, the show features Marcia Morse, Diana Jeon, Toni Martin, Russell Sunabe, David Behlke, KaNing Fong, Linda Hutchinson, Kloe Kang, Neghin Modavi, Diane Nushida-Tokuno and Liz Train.

Curator of the annual exhibit is Sarah Bremser, who called it a special show “because each participating artist offers unique and innovative perspectives on the issues relevant to the botanical garden and the proximity of H-3. The result is a spectrum of artwork, ranging in media, that partakes of both the indoor gallery space and the outdoor gardens.”
