Tales of scandal, manipulation, passion and corruption are enough to attract anyone’s attention, and HPU is counting on just that with its next production.
Ten roles are available for characters ages 15 to 84 in Les Liaisons Dangereuse (Dangerous Liaisons), a play directed by Joyce Maltby that serves up a delicious dose of scheming and seduction.
Auditions will be held at 7 p.m. Friday and at noon Saturday and Sunday in Paul and Vi Loo Theatre in Kaneohe. Rehearsals will run from 7 to 10 p.m. weeknights and some weekends, with performances April 1-May 1. Hopeful actors will read from a script, which can be reviewed in advance in HPU’s downtown and Windward libraries.
“With this play containing elements of both comedy and high drama, there is the ability to cast a wide range of ages of fascinating and dynamic characters,” said theater representative Terry Olival.
The play takes place in late-1700s France, before the revolution, with the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont plotting the kind of intrigue that would make a gentlewoman hide behind her folding fan and blush.
Roles with age or gender considerations include the widows La Marquise de Merteuil and Mme. Volange, Cecile Volange (a pretty teenager), Mme. de Rosemonde, 84; the beautiful Mme. de Tourvel, 22; and the handsome Chevalier Danceny, 20.
