The Hula Preservation Society will conduct five Kaneohe workshops in the upcoming months about rare hula implements, following the teachings of the late Nona Beamer and George Naope.
They will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Hale Pulelehua Studio, starting this Saturday. Other dates are Sept. 10, Oct. 14, Nov. 11 and Dec. 10, all at the studio, located at 46-020 Alaloa St. in Kaneohe.
Fee is $50 per person. Kamaaina receive 25 percent off, and groups of 10 or more receive 30 percent off.
“We are hoping to promote learning about these implements and promote serious study of them, through offering this introductory program where attendees have the chance to try each of them handson, learn how they’re made, and see them used in real dances from the Beamer and Naope hula lines,” explained kumu Maile Loo. Loo and Uncle Calvin Hoe of Hakipuu are the instructors.
Each workshop will feature the hula papa hehi (treadle board), a me kalaau (hand sticks), hula ki’i (Hawaiian puppetry), hula ulili (spinning gourd rattle) and hula ohe hano ihu (nose flute).
