Nov. 13: Kailua’s Long Love Affair With Music

Del.icio.usKailua Historical Society will explore the secret to Kailua’s musical legacy from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Faith Baptist Church on Kailua Road.
The public is invited to join the dialogue with guest musicians Walt Keale, Puamana, Doug Tolentino and Damien Farden, who will both entertain and inform the crowd. Recollections of the worldtraveling Kailua Madrigals is on the agenda, as well as stories from World War II, Kailua’s most-famous composer of Aloha Oe, Queen Liliu’okalani, and even the Maunawili parties the Boyd ohana hosted for King Kalakaua’s family in the late 1800s.
“What is it about our ahupua’a that captures their attention and inspires their efforts?” inquires KHS president Paul Brennan. “What senses are stimulated by this place that we call home?” He then points out the inspiration that came from the water, the mountains and the flora that surrounded Kailua’s kamaaina musical families.
“The making of music in Kailua, in all of its varied forms whether on dance floors, on the beach, at backyard parties, accompanied, unaccompanied or chanted follows to this very day.”
The Sunday program kicks off a series focused on “The Arts of Kailua.”
