Nimz Exhibit Captures Wildlife On Kure Atoll

Del.icio.usA close-up look at Kure Atoll and its wildlife opens as an exhibit Sunday at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden, featuring photos by Ilana Nimz, a 2010 University of Hawaii graduate and marine conservationist.
Nimz also has been a biological field technician on the atoll, where she monitored the Hawaiian Monk Seal population.
“Holaniku” offers images from the other Northwestern Hawaiian Islands as well as the atoll, which is the northern-most island of the Hawaiian Archipelago in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. A reception is planned for 3 to 6 p.m. Feb. 12 at the park gallery, located in its visitor center.
Visitors also will learn about the issues facing management programs that are working to maintain biological diversity and ecosystem health.
The exhibit is open daily through Feb. 29. The photographs are available for a donation, which will benefit the Kure Atoll Conservancy. Park hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call Olive Vanselow at 233-7323.
