The Boys & Girls Club Windward Clubhouse has two new benefactors to help with its budget and an after-school tutoring program at Kailua Intermediate School.

Ross Stores Inc. will underwrite “Power Hour,” a new interactive homework assistance program for members. The national discount retailer has donated $5,000 (plus $5,000 each for the Spalding and Kapaa clubhouses) for staff training plus additional resources to help keep BGCH members age 7 to 17 on top of their studies and focused on high school graduation.

“We are so thankful to Ross Stores for this grant,” said clubhouse director Maureen Purington. “We have allocated a portion of the funds to hire a math tutor who works closely with KIS math teachers to keep the kids on track.”

Added BGCH head David Nakada, “Without the necessary study skills and discipline provided by Power Hour, it’s very difficult for a young person to achieve academic success, and more importantly, ensure future work-force preparedness.”

A second donor, Gateside Inc., gave the Kailua group $5,000 for its operating budget. The construction company is helping develop Kailua Town Center-3 Project, which includes Whole Foods Market and a mix of shops and restaurants within the school’s enrollment boundaries.

“Many of our team of builders, including trades-men, suppliers, subcontractors and supervisors, are members of this Windward community,” noted Gateside president Stan Sato. “The Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii has a profound and positive impact on our young. We support the BGCH and look forward to making this an even greater place to live and raise our keiki.”
