Fireworks Tally: $40,450 To Go

Del.icio.usThe Kailua Fireworks Group intends to have all the permits in place in time for the community’s annual Independence Day fireworks show.
All that’s needed now is kokua from the community to carry off the expensive July 4 celebration, which also includes the popular morning parade through the town, handled by Kailua Chamber of Commerce.
According to the group’s volunteer coordinator, Brook Gramann, the piggy bank is one-third full.
“We’ve raised $19,550 to date,” she said last week, “and still have to raise $40,450 for the fireworks to go on.
“It’s up to the community - the businesses we shop at every day and the residents themselves - to raise the money for the fireworks.”
Also planned from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 4 at Kailua Shopping Center is “Fire and Ice,” a rally to inspire more giving to the cause, helped along by free shave ice.
Donation boxes should be up this week at all merchant stores and offices. Donations also can be made online at kailuafireworks.com, or mail checks payable to Smart Business Hawaii with memo “Kailua fireworks” to 600 Kailua Road #119, Kailua, HI 96734.
Proceeds pay for the pyrotechnics, plus road equipment, signage, off-duty police officers and more. Gramann estimates that more than 10,000 people enjoy the event each summer.
Sponsors committed so far include Castle Medical Center $6,000; John King, All Pool and Spa $5,000; Foodland Stores $3,000; Kaneohe Ranch and Castle Foundation $2,000; Kalapawai Market and Cafe $2,000; Meadow Gold $1,000; Whole Foods $500, Lanikai Bath and Body $500, and Dani and Steven McCarthy, $50.
