The Native Hawaiian Education Association will present its prestigious Educator of the Year Award at its 12th annual convention slated for Thursday and Friday at Windward Community College.

The event celebrates the theme “Ilei I ke Ala” (sur-rounded in fragrance) and offers a wide range of insight via multiple guest speakers and workshops.

Dedicated to former Educator of the Year and Office of Hawaiian Affairs Trustee Ilei Beniamina who passed away last year, this year’s award honors Hakipu’u residents Charlene and Calvin Hoe, founders of Hakipu’u Learning Center and champions of K-12 education, as well as Rose Yamada, a retired curriculum specialist responsible for starting the state’s Kupuna and Hawaiian Studies programs.

Police Chief Louis Kealoha will give the keynote address, along with Kahunawai Wright and Nalani Balutski. Some of the available workshops include presentations by Native Hawaiian doctors, teaching strategies and college student services.

A panel of slack key guitar masters wraps up the conference. Musicians such as John Keawe, George Kuo and Martin Pahinui will focus on how knowledge is passed from teacher to student, and how that process translates into the evolution of slack key guitar sound and style.

Convention fee is $150, which includes breakfast and lunch. A discounted $100 fee is available for delegates age 60 and older.
