Paliku Theatre will stage the popular Broadway musical West Side Story Sept. 25 to Oct. 25 under the direction of Ron Bright with music by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.
“This is the third time I’ve done this show in the last 30 years,” Bright said, “and each time I’ve been blessed to have an amazing cast.”
Among them is Miko Franconi McDonnell, a Kalaheo High graduate who plays a member of the Jets gang. “Working with Ron Bright, he’s amazing,” said McDonnell, who also was in Bright’s award-winning Paliku shows Miss Saigon and The Wind in the Willows. “He has these visions. You can’t see the whole picture until you are actually rehearsing.”
Castle High 2003 graduate Tori Anguay plays Anita, the best friend of Maria. Anguay has done shows with Bright since she was in fifth grade. “It’s fun to have family to do the show with,” she said, noting that her brother Zare plays Anita’s boyfriend Bernardo. One of her favorite numbers in the show is America, which is about the Puerto Rican Sharks gang.
“I consider myself more of a dancer first, and it’s a dancing number,” she explained. Choreography is by Marcelo Pacleb, artistic director of
24/VII Danceforce and a longtime collaborator on Bright’s musicals at Castle High and elsewhere.
Other musical favorite include Maria, Tonight and I Feel Pretty.
Windward residents with major roles are Patrick Torres who plays Doc, the owner of the drugstore where Tony works, and former Miss Hawaii 2007 Ashley Hayfield, who plays Anyways, a Jet. Kim Anderson is Maria, Kyle McCraw is Tony, and Chris Vilasenor is Riff.
Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 4 p.m. Sundays (except Sept. 26). Tickets cost $28, $26 and $18. For reservations, call 235-7310 or log onto http://www.eTicketHawaii.com.
