The 2007 Kaneohe Christmas Parade committee is hard at work planning for the Dec. 1 march, but the easy part was picking Gordon Miyamoto as grand marshal.
“He’s the most respected community person,” said committee secretary Kuulei Richardson Olsen.“He’s into so many things. He’s already into a new project.”
Miyamoto, the site manager of Kaneohe Community Family Center, was nominated by Janis Lindley, who also appreciates the way he unites varied groups for one goal. “He gets all the different communities to work together as a whole,” explained Lindley who is with the Kaneohe Elementary K Kids Club. “He’s modest, humble, and caring. And he’s made us a great community.”
A Kahaluu resident and 1976 Castle graduate with a UH master’s degree in communications, Miyamoto has been with the KCFC for 10 years and has been its site manager for four. Through KCFC he coordinates the Community Works in 96744 Coalition, as well as Kaneohe Day on the Bay, Windward Run and Read For Literacy, and the just-completed Windward Ho’olaulea. He also is statewide coordinator for Hawaii Parental Information Resource Center, and he teaches communication classes at Pacific Rim Bible Institute.
He and his wife Susan (a Kaneohe Elementary teacher) have two children: David, a Castle High freshman, and Kristin, a King seventh-grader.
“I’m honored,” said grand marshal Miyamoto, who normally shuns the limelight.“It’s more of a recognition for the family center than recognizing me personally. We do a lot for the community.”
Deadline is Nov. 10 to sign up for the annual march down Kamehameha Highway, which begins at 9 a.m. by Windward Mall. Applicants must attend a planning meeting at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at Kaneohe Community and Senior Center on Puohala Street. For an application, call 348-2749 or log onto www.kaneohechristmasparade.com
