Pali Lanes Strikes Out This Month

Del.icio.usAfter the Friday night league finishes bowling on Dec. 18, Pali Lanes will close its doors for good, ending a 50-year history as a home to strikes, spares and fellowship.
General manager Jean Tamala said that people are sad to hear about the closure, which comes two weeks ahead of the Dec. 31 lease expiration.
“All of a sudden they decided to remember the Kailua bowling alley, and now they want to know where they are going,” she said.
Bowler Ed Medeiros, who spearheaded petitions to keep the Hekili Street bowling center open a few years ago, meets Dec. 7 with Kaneohe Ranch to explore any possible way to keep the lanes open. Hawaii bowling officials Art Machado and Ron Shim will attend, along with general manager of Hawaii TV Bowling Scott Mitamura.
“It’s the only entertainment center we’ve got on this side of the island,” Medeiros said. “If it’s run right, it is a gold mine.”
A sentimental last bowling night is planned by the “Fun Foursome” tonight (Dec. 9), one of the first leagues formed at Pali Lanes a half-century ago.
Once it closes, only two public lanes will remain in operation on Oahu - both of them across the Koolaus: Aiea Bowl and Leeward Bowl. Military bowling lanes are located at Kaneohe Marine base, Hickam Air Force Base, Schofield Barracks and Naval Station Pearl Harbor.
