Faith Baptist Church’s live Nativity scene will go on as scheduled this year, despite the loss of Mary and Joseph’s donkey.
“We will have animals, definitely - I guess I should say Lord willing at this point,” said event organizer Donna Carroll.“But Mary and Joseph will have to come in with a pony.”
Nozawa’s Ark, which provides the animals each year, alerted Carroll to the donkey’s death. The Kaaawa family farm does many fundraising events for schools, fun fairs and other similar events.
“They come up and set up a whole corral,” Carroll said.
The community is welcome to enjoy the annual live scene at 7 and 8 p.m. Saturday in front of the church, where they dramatize the story of Mary and Joseph’s travels, the birth of Jesus and the journey of the Three Wise Men.The church is at 1230 Kailua Road, near the Windward YMCA. For more information, call 261-7971.
In the cast are Laurie and DeWayn Sorrells as Mary and Joseph; baby “Vu” and baby “Downham"share the role of the infant Christ child. This year’s story is told from the perspective of the three angels, played by Marlene Nations, Emily Metcalf and Sara Fant. The wise men are Steve Higashi, Ted Tengan and Craig Metcalf; and Jon Barshaw plays the innkeeper. There is also choir of angels and shepherds.
“It’s a church family effort. Everybody gets involved, they all add their flair and their flavor to it,“Carroll said, giving additional credit to choir director Anne Vitro and the rest of the crew for their hard work.
“It’s great fun,“said Carroll.“The kids love it, and they just look forward to it every year.”
