League Going Extra Innings To Help Coach

Del.icio.usKailua Little League volunteers and players are hoping for a boost of support at this week’s Majors League tournament on Keolu Field, where their concession stand is collecting funds to replace a stolen generator.
The KLL Royals team had borrowed the Honda 2000 generator (worth about $1,200) to power their home field’s sound system and support the concession booth they started to earn cash to replace coach Adam Lui’s ride-on lawnmower. (It blew an engine four months ago.)
“We had raised almost enough for the lawnmower,” said parent Lilith Samson, “when intruders smashed open a dead-bolted door on an equipment shed holding the generator. It’s not only a large inconvenience and burden to the league, but results in a substantial loss of money.
“It’s disappointing; it’s disheartening to think that somebody within our own community would actually do this and put Kailua Little League at a loss,” she added. “This hurts the kids. This hurts the community ... but we’re not going to let them win!”
The generator was reported stolen between 6 and 11 a.m. June 27 from a shed next to the tennis courts at Keolu Hills Neighborhood Park. Witnesses or anyone with details about the theft should call police. Those who wish to donate to the lawn-mower and generator funds may do so after 4 p.m. July 4-10 at the concession stand during the tournament at Keolu Field in Enchanted Lake, or by taking checks made out to KLL to any American Savings Bank branch or mailing them to P.O. Box 846, Kailua HI 96734.
Samson also invites everyone to just come out to support the all-star teams and league volunteers who make the tournaments happen.
For decades, Lui used his ride-on lawnmower to groom the field for games. But when it broke down, league volunteers old and young came together with push mowers, rakes, weed-whackers, wheelbarrows and water to help him keep the field looking good.
“We are a committed team with just a few volunteers, and so we persevered,” Samson said. They had almost reached their monetary goal for the coach’s new lawnmower - $2,100 and counting - when the thieves struck.
