Lanikai’s Declaring War On Electric Bill

Del.icio.usLanikai Elementary will soon install a photovoltaic energy system using a just-released half-million-dollar grant from the state. Panels will go up on the cafeteria roof, along with a converter to provide a complete renewable energy system for the public charter school.
“The new photovoltaic project is another step in our continuing effort to decrease Hawaii’s dependence on imported fuel while also helping to make our school campuses more cost efficient,” said Gov. Linda Lingle in announcing the fund’s release. “Each clean energy project like this one, which increases the use of renewable energy, moves us closer to reaching our Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative goal of achieving 70 percent clean energy by 2030.”
The system is expected to cut the school’s electric bill by about $45,000 per year, leaving school officials and board members very pleased.
“Lanikai takes its impact on the environment very seriously, and we are grateful to Gov. Lingle for her commitment to clean energy,” said Louis Saint-Cyr, who chairs Lanikai’s school board. “This initiative will provide our children with a hands-on opportunity to discover the benefits of green energy.” The work should be completed by next spring.
