Kumu Ola O Kahaluu, a coalition of area churches, will serve a free Thanksgiving luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday in the Kahaluu Elementary School cafeteria, with entertainment by Kapena and the De Lima Ohana.

“Fliers have gone out to the school, and we really do enjoy working hard for this,” said coordinator Leolani De Lima, a member of Ekalesia The Foundation of Jesus Christ, which is one of seven participating congregations.

The event also honors one outstanding volunteer for 2010. Now in its ninth year, the festive and filling lunch is open to everyone, especially those who are in need or have nowhere else to go. (If there is surplus food, according to Rev. Bob Nakata, it will go to feed the homeless.)

A feast for up to 300 guests is being prepared by school cafeteria manager Nora Takeno and crew using donated turkeys, trimmings and cash from the community. Takeno retires next month, which could leave next year’s project in doubt.

Other sponsors are Light of Promise Ministries, Kahaluu United Methodist Church, Hope Chapel-Kahaluu, St. John’s By The Sea Episcopal Church, Kahaluu Baptist Chapel and Windward Baptist Church. For details, call 235-4200.
