Ho’omaluhia Plants, Tips At Mini Sale

Del.icio.usThe nursery volunteers at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden will let their hard work speak for itself at their Mini Plant Sale happening from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the garden.
The sale, which benefits the Friends of Honolulu Botanical Gardens, will feature plants grown by the volunteers, such as varieties of hybrid ti, dwarf Japanese hybrid ginger, green island fig, Fiji ivory nut palms, dwarf Mexican beach zinnia, red cassia and more.
Also on sale will be three very rare “Queen of Flowering Trees,” also known as Pride of Burma, that will be up for bid in the silent auction. “I don’t think I know any other plant sale that had this one,” said Paul Weissich, volunteer for the past 19 years and director of Honolulu Botanical Gardens for 33 years. “It’s a real collector’s item.”
On clearance will be a handful of Aglaonema plants, which are rather recent imports from the Philippines. The volunteers also will provide handouts with information on all the plants for sale and advice on how to care for each of them.
“We will have a lot of unusual species,” Weissich added, “and this is a way for us to get these plants out into people’s gardens.” The Friends always are looking for more volunteers. To join the green thumbs, call Weissich at 235-3377 or visit www.friendsofhonolulubotanicalgardens.com.
