Ho’olaulea An All-day Bash In Windward

Back for its seventh year, the Windward Ho’olaulea is on for 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Windward Community College, which will showcase its programs and facilities along with making sure everyone is well-fed and entertained throughout the day.
Co-sponsored by Kaneohe Business Group, the event has added the familiar 2007 motto “Celebrate Kaneohe” and also plans a silent auction with a wide range of trips, hotel stays, golf, jewelry and clothing up for bid. Notable items include autographed footballs from coach June Jones, a boat trip to Coconut Island, and an entire Dickens village set of collectibles. Auction proceeds will benefit WCC programs and student scholarships.
“We’re very grateful for the tremendous community support of this event,“said WCC chancellor Angela Meixell.“The college has some wonderful new facilities and a tremendous amount of talent to share.” Among these are the Imaginarium, offering five showings of the star-gazing program, Flights of Fancy, during the day, a new art exhibit in the gleaming new Gallery ‘Iolani, the biotech medicinal garden and the Lanihuli Observatory.
“The day will showcase WCC’s programs and new facilities, local businesses, community groups and entertainers with ties to this side of the island,” added Hoolaulea co-chair Janis Chun, herself a member of the Kaneohe’s pioneer Yim family. New to the effort this year, for example, are the King Builders, a Kaneohe Kiwanis-sponsored service club from King Intermediate, which will assist in festival activities.
Non-stop entertainment features several Hoku winners and familiar home grown Windward bands and halau. On the schedule are Na Kupuna O Koolau, 9:15 a.m.; Pila Nahenahe, 10:15; Al Barcarse’s halau, 11:15; Castle Jazz Band, 12:15 p.m.; Kupa’aina, 1:15; Celebrate Kaneohe song winners, 2:15; Halau Hula o Napunaheleonapua, 3:15; Holunape, 4:15; Hawaii Loa, 5:15; Na Kama, 6:15; Kaukahi, 7:15; and Kapena, 8:15.
Food and craft vendors will fill the campus and keep visitors occupied between performances. For more information, call co-chair Libby Young at 235-7396.
