Halloween: From Hayride To The Street

Get ready for “the scariest Halloween event on Oahu” as Gunstock Ranch presents Haunted Hayride 2007, starting at 7 p.m. Friday through Oct. 31 (but closed Sunday) at the Laie ranch.
Guests depart on a 15-minute ride where they will come face-to-face with the Headless Horseman, Leatherface, Jason from Friday the 13th, nightmarchers and more. Parents be forewarned: Although there is no age limit, this hayride is not meant for children. Rides run every 20 to 25 minutes, and guests can purchase refreshments from the ranch’s chuckwagon while enjoying free entertainment. Hayride tickets are $5 and parking is free. More kid-friendly fare can be found at the ranch from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday during Halloween Fun Day and the Horse & Rider Costume Contest. This special Halloween Horse Show, free to the public, welcomes keiki from 5 to 17 to dress themselves and their horses in fantasy costumes and vie for a $100 cash prize. Also planned: Lifesaver Race, Hurry Scurry, Egg and Spoon Race and Ride-a-Buck. All proceeds go to the Paniola O Ko’olauloa 4-H Club. Still more for Windward Halloween fans: * Author Marion Coste signs copies of The Hawaiian Bat: Ope’ape’a from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at Borders Kaneohe. Children can go batty and create their own bookmarks (235-8789).
* Lanikai Elementary School holds its 17th annual Haunted House & Fun Fair from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, featuring a costume contest, bouncy houses, pie-in-the-face and dunking booths. The Scary Haunted House unlocks its creaky doors from 6 to 9 p.m.; brave children under 12 and seniors get in for $3, adults $5. Treats and drinks are available for purchase. All proceeds go to the school PTA (721-3101).
* Take holiday home dcor to a new level at “Flowers for a Festive Home with Liz Requilman” 6:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at Kahuku Library. Learn how to transform pumpkins, flowers and wheat into a floral arrangement worthy of any Halloween or Thanksgiving feast centerpiece. Materials are free, and pumpkin containers are provided for a nominal fee (293-8935).
* Even Dracula will give the “Gift of Life” when Kailua High School National Honor Society and Hawaii Blood Bank present the school’s annual Halloween Blood Drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 31 in the school Library. Call 848-4721 for appointments.

* Windward YMCA Teen Night from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 27 has a Halloween theme, costume contest, free games, sports and food for all intermediate and high school students (261-0808).
* Pali View Baptist Church has a free Harvest Fest from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 27 at 45-510 Halekou Road, featuring the story of Joseph, games, crafts, popcorn, cotton candy and many surprises (247-4271).
* The Windward MOMS Club chapter has a “Trunk o Treat"open house from 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 29 at Maunawili Valley Neighborhood Park,where keiki have treat-or-treat while moms mingle (261-8721).
* Regal Cinemas at Windward Mall invites all ages to dress as their favorite movie character for a contest from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 27. Mall merchants also stage a Safe Trick-or-Treat from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31 with candy, entertainment, activities and Dizanne, the Sorceress of Halloween (235-1143).
