Girl Scouts Grow Garden In Lanikai

Hawaii Girl Scout Troop 879 dug deep into the Lanikai community this fall to create and construct a community garden, located between the pavilion and the basketball courts.
“It is a place and community that the girls knew would be receptive to the idea of the garden,” said troop leader Patty Bell, referring to scouts Julia Douglas, Laura Jude, Makanani Bell and Emma Smith, two of whom live in the neighborhood.
The garden has a wide array of plants and vegetables, including tomatoes, papaya, lettuce, green beans, basil, corn, onions and hot chili peppers, and it’s supported by several community organizations. The University of Hawaii, for example, donated a large amount of the seeds and others have given plants.
“The garden is now a work in progress from the standpoint that the girls would like to grow different crops and then turn it over to the community,” Bell added.“They just had their first mini-harvest last week, and the eggplant, corn and tomatoes are starting to show signs of flowering.”
The girls also are aiming to achieve their Gold Award for the service project. They built it from the ground up, brainstorming ideas, a vision statement and a business plan, which was presented for approval to Lanikai Community Association.

“The girls are really enjoying it, it is very rewarding for them and they’re passionate about sustainability and the community,” noted Bell. “Over the years they have worked on community services, with the elderly and with kids, and they wanted to bring it all together with this sustainable garden.”
The girls also laid out educational displays and invited eager neighborhood children to pitch in.
