Fishpond To Sell Its First Moi Harvest

Del.icio.usHeeia Fishpond is living up to its name this weekend with its “first official harvest” of moi.
Paepae O Heeia,the caretaker of the ancient pond for owner Kamehameha Schools, will sell fish to its friends, supporters and the public from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the pond - first-come, first-served. Profits will go to maintain and restore the 88-acre pond.
“We’re hoping for a lot of people,” said Keli’i Kotubetey, the group’s community economic development coordinator.“They look like wild moi and are very tasty,” he added. “I hope we have enough food!”
Using a grant from NOAA and the National Marine Fisheries, Paepae purchased fingerlings from Oceanic Institute to start the moi project about nine months ago.With proper feeding and care in the pond, the prized “restaurant” fish (also called Pacific threadfin) have grown to 3/4 of a pound each and are about 11 inches long.
“It’s our chance to begin to nourish our geographic area and educate and feed the community,” Kotubetey explained. “We also thought it would be cool to have poi with our moi, so Waiahole farmers will be selling poi, kalo pa’a (cooked, unmashed taro) and luau.”
Moi is $8 a pound, limu $2 a pound. Pre-orders must be paid for by Sept. 14, as there is a limited supply. The farmers’ foods, along with other homegrown products, are available “at a reasonable price.”

Paepae O Heeia was founded in 2001 to revive the pond and its traditions.
