Experts Update Waimanalo On Meth Scourge

Del.icio.usHawaii Meth Project will team up with Waimanalo Health Center to present an update on the scope and nature of crystal methamphetamines at 6:30 p.m. March 18 at the WHC’s Goebert Training Center.
“It’s an opportunity for those who are not familiar with meth, first of all, to learn how it affects the community and to become more aware and more diligent about the drug,” said Cindy Adams, executive director of HMP. “And secondly, it’s an opportunity for those who are intimately knowledgeable about how devastating this drug is to come forth, offer support and validate the cause.
“For a parent with a child on meth, it’s helpful for them to know that they’re not alone.”
Carolyn Denney, HMP’s Oahu lead volunteer coordinator, will talk with concerned residents about the dangers and effects of ice and explain the community-action programs available to help reduce first-time meth use.
“Someone very close to her was addicted to meth, so Carolyn knows first-hand how addictive and dangerous this drug is,” Adams added. “Meth is pervasive across the state, but we’re significantly reducing first-time meth use primarily among teens and young adults.”
