The Women’s Community Correctional Center recently harvested 80 heads of lettuce after five weeks of cultivation - despite budget cuts to the successful horticulture program there.
“We have 10 delightful and really excellent students who are learning to grow hydroponically, in pots and in the soil,” said Margaret Brezel, Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle’s volunteer coordinator for the Kailua prison program. “When they are released, they can provide food for their families no matter what their living situations or their economic situations may be. We are very proud.”
Brezel noted that the state cut back on funds and has laid off the horticulture instructor who was working for eight years at the prison.
“We didn’t want to see the program just die,” she explained. “We put together volunteer teachers and a consultant in hydroponics.”
The vegetables grown go on the dinner table for the inmates, who now can enjoy salad a couple times a week. Tomatoes are next on the list of produce to be grown at WCCC.
