The First Presbyterian Church has created quite a stir since purchasing the Koolau Golf Club two months ago - mostly because of the unusual combination of a church and with a golf club.

Although ownership has changed hands, not much is different in the facility’s dayto-day operations.

As the only church in Hawaii with its own 18-hole golf course, First Presbyterian chose its new location because of the space for its growing congregation, not because they want to hit the greens.

“We were growing for the past 13 years, serving 1,400 people with 83 parking spaces,“explained Ron Mathieu, the church’s executive director.“Now we have 365 (parking spaces). We knew we needed 6 to 10 acres, and our long term vision was the facility would encompass what we have in this place.”

While the entire clubhouse is used for worship services and classes on Sunday, operations at the golf course and restaurant, Honey’s at Koolau, will remain the same under current operator American Golf Course Corp.

First Presbyterian intends to renovate areas on the property, including the expansion of space for classrooms and meeting rooms and enlarging the ballroom.

Also happening this weekend on the new Koolau campus is the church’s 30th annual Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The public is welcome to come take a look and browse the booths, which will offer the popular mango chutney, homemade pepper and lilikoi jellies, baked goods, crafts, books, music CDs and videos. A live auction will be conducted for the first time of original paintings and other collectibles.

Proceeds from the bazaar go to the church’s local, national and international women’s and children’s missions. This year’s proceeds will help 7-year-old Vialeska Rodriguez of the Dominican Republic and the Tumaini Children’s Home in Kenya (medical supplies and clothing).
