To launch the holiday season, the city and the Kaneohe Christmas Parade Committee will stage the Kaneohe Christmas Lighting Ceremony and block party from 3 to 10 p.m. Sunday.

The street festival will close Waikalua Road as well as all traffic lanes and sidewalk areas from Kamehameha Highway to the Kaneohe Police Station/Library driveway. That’s where all the fun begins. (The library also will close early that day at 1 p.m.)

The block party has food booths, music by Kapena, bouncers and lots more. The lighting ceremony with the mayor will be held at sunset.

Then on Dec. 3, Castle Medical Center will host the Christmas Tree-Lighting Ceremony for Kailua. Music by the Marine Corps band begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus and the tree-lighting at 7. Also in store are caroling, refreshments and free trolley rides provided by Kaneohe Ranch.

The holiday cheer continues with the Kaneohe parade, which begins at 9 a.m. Dec. 6.

“We have about 2,800 participants,” said committee secretary Anna Kuulei Richardson Olsen, who has helped on the parade for 13 years. “We have eight floats, competitions, horses and giveaways by Kaneohe Bay View Golf Course and 24-Hour Fitness.”

The roster includes Kikaida and his friends, Pohai Nani, Aloha Care, Support The Troops and His Highest Praise, Girl Scouts, Kama’aina Kids and many more. Residents are encouraged to bring a toy for Toys for Tots to the drop-off site at American Savings Bank throughout the march.

For more information, call Olsen at 348-2749.
