The second-grade class at Saint Ann’s Model School in Kaneohe has taken a lesson on caring for the earth and turned it into a project of giving through “Recycle For Love.”
“The children came up with the idea that we collect cans to recycle,” explained their teacher, Cindy Ramos,“and when I asked them what to do with the money, they suggested that we buy something for poor children instead of using the money for the classroom. We have a food pantry at our school, and there’s always a line, and our kids see the families standing in line,so they wanted to give gifts to those families.”
Since the project started, the keiki have amassed $260 in redemption money, and the fund continues to grow. With the grand total, to be determined Thursday, all 26 students can spend roughly $10 each on a gift-shopping trip to Let’s Party Hawaii at Windward Mall next Tuesday morning. (To donate cans, call 382-1727.)
“We’re going to discuss before we go the kinds of things to buy and things they need. We’ll just brainstorm, and hopefully they make good choices,” added Ramos. “Then we’re going to bring what they buy back here and wrap them to be distributed at the food pantry.”
To accompany the gifts, the children also are working on cards that will"truly illustrate their ideas of giving and compassion.”
