Hoooo, dawgie! L.A. (that’s Lower Alabama to you non-southern folk) singer/songwriter Jon Miller of Mobile is crossing the Pacific to perform “positive country music” at the 9 a.m. service Sunday and a 7 p.m. concert July 29 at Windward Unity Church on Mookua Street in Kailua.
“We like to have a lot of incoming performers from all over, and our music director got ahold of him and was really interested in his positive style,” explained Keoni Maiwela of the church office. “He has a very interesting way about his music.”
That’s right. Country’s not just “cryin’ in yer beer, my wife left me/dog died, there’s a barbecue stain on my white T-shirt” music to Miller, a 13-year veteran of the industry. His positive approach packs in styles of country, inspiration, rock and bluegrass, with samples for listening at jonmilleronline.com.
“If most people come around to country music, it’s because they’re caught up in the lyrics,” Miller said. “They are caught up in the story.”
Miller also produces and hosts his own variety show, Country Twang, out of his hometown, and over the years has opened for the Charlie Daniels Band, Trace Adkins and Josh Turner. In 2006 he was nominated for Country Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year in the Just Plain Folks Awards, which honors independent musicians from around the world, and he’s just released his fourth Nashville-produced CD, Blessin’s & Lessons.
Admission to the concert is free, but donations are welcome. For more information, call 262-6731.
