Armed with a Harold K.L. Castle Foundation grant of $90,000, the Friends of Aikahi Playground are looking for “hundreds"of volunteers -over age 9 - to help them build the new structure for the keiki.

“The huge groundswell of support for this playground is what caught our attention,” said Terry George, the foundation’s executive director. “We are proud to be a part of this community project. It is already making an impact on the adults involved, and I can’t wait to see Windward Oahu’s keiki playing there.”

Dave Eachus, the playground project’s co-coordinator, calls the grant the centerpiece of the Friends fundraising effort, which began last fall. The group intends to spend $75,000 on construction and save $15,000 for long-term maintenance. (The group also plans a rummage sale from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the school. For details, call Marisa at 744-2237.)

Materials are coming by barge to Hawaii, and a marathon build session is planned for Feb. 11 to 16. “There is a place for you on our team of builders, regardless of your skills,“said member Jenny Helman, For more information or to offer help, call 744-0419.

As seen on www.aikahiplayground.org, the theme is “From the Mountain to the Sea,” and it has a keiki-inspired design with a volcano and lava slide, tree houses and outrigger canoe attractions. Additional corporate sponsors are Ameron Hawaii and Hardware Hawaii.
