The Peter Miller Foundation will have its sixth annual Shorebreak Classic from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Kalama Beach Club, honoring the memory of Kailua best friends Jason Bogle, Peter Miller (Kalaheo 1991) and David Aluli, who all lost their lives within a year of each other.
The surfing contest has attracted about 100 contestants in five divisions of keiki and young adults (ages18 and under) - all of whom will get lunch from Zia’s and ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery Waikiki. The foundation also has thousands of dollars worth of product donated by the surf and skate industries, so every contestant will leave the beach with a prize pack and T-shirt. Attendees may purchase a $1 ticket for raffle prizes.
Miller himself launched the first contest in 2005 in honor of Bogle, who died of cancer in 2004. In the spring of 2006, Miller and Aluli also died - Miller in an air ambulance crash on Maui and Aluli of a rare mental condition.
Peter’s twin brother Mike, along with brother Tony and parents Barbara and Emmett, established the foundation in honor of Peter and his friends. Proceeds from the surf meets help the foundation bring surfing to underprivileged children.
