Mock Hospital To Train CNA Hopefuls

Del.icio.usCastle High School has just taken a major step to open up future nursing jobs for its Health Services Academy students.
On Aug. 26 the school dedicated its new Clinical Skills Laboratory, which its 13 third-year students will use to train in the academy’s Nursing Aide class. Academy coordinator Sandra Linskey said the lab in Room 49 is set up “like a mock hospital” with five beds and five mannequins.
“We are growing our own healers to address the critical health care work force shortage in Hawaii,” Linskey explained. “They will be able to practice the skills they need to become certified nurse’s aides.”
The next step after graduation would be a Windward Community College internship, which prepares them to take the CNA exam.
The new lab is partially funded by $38,000 from the nonprofit Alu Like Inc. which already supports Native Hawaiian students in the academy through Project E ‘Ola Pono. Teaching with Linskey in the program are Aaron Tsuha, Shawn Mashino Char and Kehau Bishaw.
“I tell our students they’ve got to learn well, because someday they’ll be taking care of me,” Linskey added.
