Volunteers Needed For Sony Open

Del.icio.usFriends of Hawaii Charities seeks volunteers to work the 2010 Sony Open in Hawaii PGA Tour tournament Jan. 11-17, ranging from marshals to drivers, and there’s a fit for everyone - even those who don’t know much about golf.
The PGA Tour tourney signals the launch of full-field events for this year and has a purse of $5.5 million.
Among the contenders for the $990,000 winner’s prize will be Hawaii’s own Tadd Fujikawa, who is playing on the sponsor’s exemption. (Fujikawa, who will turn 19 just before the tournament starts, made golf history at 2007 Sony Open as the youngest amateur to make the cut in nearly 50 years.)
Monday’s kickoff will feature an 11 a.m. Shotgun Sony Dream Cup Pro-Am; Tuesday offers an all-day Professional Practice Round and a 3 p.m. King Group Pro-Junior Skills Challenge. The matchup includes five of Hawaii’s top junior golfers paired with five PGA tour professionals in a three-skills challenge. Wednesday is the official Pro-Am, and Thursday-Sunday is reserved for the all-day four rounds of tournament play, presented on The Golf Channel. The Million-Dollar Shot Finals will round out the week on Sunday, Jan. 17.
Waialae Country Club golf course’s Pacific oceanside greens have been the historic venue for the Sony Open for the past 44 years. Fee to witness the action is $175 per day for an Ocean Club Skybox Pass. Admission is free Monday and Tuesday, and $15 per person daily Wednesday through Sunday if purchased in advance online or at First Hawaiian Bank branches on Oahu. Children ages 12 and under get in free when accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. Season badges ($50 for the week) and daily passes ($20) also are available to fans at the gate.
