Sun Coming Up For Kaimuki High

Del.icio.usA two-year plan by the state Department of Education to bring solar power to public schools is moving closer to fruition.
Its first Power Purchase agreement contract to Hawaii Pacific Solar LLC will benefit Kaimuki High School, as well as Kahuku High and Intermediate and Aiea and Waianae high schools. They will have solar panels installed to lower utility bills at the same time saving the DOE a total of $1 million in roof repair costs once the project is complete.
The schools were selected after meeting various criteria, including substantial electrical use, outstanding roof repairs and maximum sunshine. Hawaii Pacific Solar will install the systems at no cost to the DOE and therefore, once the systems are up and running, the DOE will purchase power from the solar company.
Construction is expected to be completed by December, and the solar power used at the schools should help alleviate oil imports by more than 400 barrels annually.
