Hawaii Rifle Association invites the public to two days of shooting fun from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 19 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 20 at the Koko Head Shooting Complex.

Admission is free to the 17th annual HRA Shooting Sports Fair, and script costs $1 each.

“This event is put on so the general public can come out and discover the shooting sports in a safe environment with lots of trained instructors on hand to assist them,” said Harvey Gerwig, HRA president. “It’s run like a carnival: The participants purchase script and then go to each of the many venues and use the script to purchase time on all the various guns.”

Cost varies depending on the type of gun and ammunition. One script, for example, will buy five rounds with a .22 long rifle or three rounds on a 9mm handgun.

Also available are action pistols, air guns, high-power rifles, shotguns, antiques, pellet guns and more.

“We have an incredible array of firearms at this event with knowledgeable instructors standing by to talk to the participants about the displays,” added Gerwig.

All participants must first attend a safety briefing. Children ages 6 and older can shoot the BB guns and pellet guns; children ages 9 and up can shoot the .22 long rifle pistols and rifles, and children ages 12 and older can shoot all firearms as long as the instructor feels that they can handle them safely.

“I would like to reiterate again that all participants are assisted and taught by experienced shooters, many of whom are certified NRA instructors,” he said.

The HRA was established in 1857 and is the official National Rifle Association-affiliated club for the state.
