Recycle To Benefit Canoe Club

Aloha Aina Earth Day comes to Hawaii Kai from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 12, bringing a major recycling drive to benefit Hui Nalu Canoe Club.

Residents can bring all kinds of metal, paper, appliances and old bulky things to the club’s canoe halau near Hawaii Kai boat dock at Maunalua Bay.

“Aloha Aina is a great opportunity to clean out your garage, your closets, your attic and to rid your business of old equipment that’s been collecting dust,” said Cathy Ho, a coach at Hui Nalu who is helping organize the drive. “It’s also a responsible way to dispose of these items while helping out a great cause.”

The recycling drive is spear-headed by local lawmakers and businesses and coordinated by Rene Mansho of Schnitzer Steel, a metal recycler that will give cash proceeds from the drive to the canoe club.

Items sought are scrap metal, auto parts, bicycles, metal appliances, cell phones, newspapers, phone books, magazines, cardboard, plastic bags and hangers, printer cartridges,computers (one per car), laptops (no limit), HI-5 beverage containers, green waste, eyeglasses, hearing aids, cooking oil and all kinds of batteries. Usable clothing and household items will go to Goodwill Industries. Also, incandescent light bulbs can be exchanged for CFL bulbs (two per person).
