New Sewer Pipes

Del.icio.usHawaii Kai residents may have noticed construction along Kalanianaole Highway and a portion of Lunalilo Home Road, which is all because of a sewer line replacement project by Hawaii American Water.
A wholly owned subsidiary of American Water, HAW is working to replace about one-fourth mile of pressurized pipeline, considered a critical component in the collection system used to convey the community’s wastewater to its East Honolulu Wastewater Treatment Plant.
According to manager Lee Mansfield, replacement of this pipeline is necessary because at 50 years old, it has nearly reached the end of its “useful life.”
“Installing a new sewer main at this location is part of an ongoing process of improving our infrastructure and allowing Hawaii American Water to continue to provide its high level of service,” said Mansfield. “Making these types of investments today will reduce the potential for sewage spills and will protect human health and our environment for years to come.”
The force main has been installed, and crews recently restored, repaved and re-striped the road. At least one lane in each direction is open at all times and work is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
The private company serves about 30,000 residents.
